Kaup Barrows
Kaup Barrows submitted by Ogneslav : Kaup barrow cemetery in the beginning of May 2014. One of the burial mounds in the center of picture is hardly visible among the trees. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Barrow cemetery in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia.

This barrow and flatgrave cemetery located in the small forest carrying the name "Kaup" on the outskirts of Mokhovoe village in 3 km southwards from Zelenogradsk town. Burial mounds dated back to the period of IX-XI centuries, while the eldest flatgrave burials belong to V-VI centuries. During the exploration of 1980 archaeologists registered 203 barrows (see the cemetery map), the number of flatgraves was uncountable due the absence of visible signs.

The cemetery was found in 1865, during archaeological excavations performed in 1873-1937 not less than 86 burial mounds were examined. Further excavations were performed in 1956, 1958, 1980, 2000 and 2004-2011.

The site is easily reachable but I suppose the best time to visit it is the early spring or late autumn. In summer time due to dense vegetation it is rather difficult even to walk through the forest, not to mention to take decent pictures of the burial mounds which are only 0.5-1.5 m high.
