Cave in Slovakia
Domica cave belongs to a vast network extending southwards into Hungary (Aggtelek and around).
Discovered in October 1926 by J.Majko.
Upon discovery, the cave looked like it hab been abandoned all of a sudden by its neolithic dwellers, probably due to a landslide which covered the original main entrance.
Archaeological surveys were conducted from 1932 to 1934, and again in the years 1950's-1960's.
Contrary to most caves where people actually lived at or near its entrance, Domica saw neolithic ancestors living in the depth of the cave, using fire as source of light and heat (some places are still sooted up by the smoke). Shelters were built, to provide a protection against dripping water. Much of the artefacts found on the caves "vanished", only a few made it to museums collection.
Showcases at the entrance of the site exhibits a few vases : engraved containers belonging to the Bükk Culture particularly known for its thin-edged ceramics.
