Sikachi-Alyan Petroglyphs
Sikachi-Alyan Petroglyphs submitted by Harald_Platta : Petroglyph in Sakatschi Aljan (also called Sikachi-Alyan) in Siberia, Russia. This photo was taken of a basalt stone replica shown in the Museum of Natural History Nürnberg (Bavaria, Germany). The petroglyph is thought to show a mask of a shaman. The original is supposed to have been created in the Neolithic about 5000 - 6000 years ago. The copy was made from the original stone b... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Many petroglyphs on boulders at the lower Amur river at Sakachi-Alyan. The oldest are dated back to 12.000 BCE. Many human-like masks and skeleton style petroglyphs can be found at the riverside. Photo by Harald Platta

Additional information submitted by Drew Parsons in October 2017: I visited this site in late October 2017. There was a lot of snow on the rocks making it very difficult to see and photograph the petroglyphs. However, it was easier to see the many items of graffiti that have been etched into the boulders in recent times which was distressing. The museum in the village was devoid of any exhibits and the hall was being used as a community hall. I guess there are exhibits along with souvenir stalls in the summer when more folk visit the site. There are two areas with petroglyphs at Sakachi-Alyan. One easily reached on foot along the beach to the east of the settlement, the other to the west and requiring a boat trip which you can organise via locals. There are excellent copies of many of the boulders with petroglyphs on them at the Kharabrovsk Archaeological Museum.
