Chambered Cairn in Honshū

The only example of a chambered cairn on the Izu peninsula, which was supposedly an island on the Philippine Sea Plate which drifted and crashed into Honshū main island due to the gradual slide of the tectonic plate. In 1958 local high school students excavated the site, since then almost no formal excavation nor investigations have been done.

The cairn is divided into two groups which lie in the two valleys, separated by a gentle hill on the south of the artists commune in the wood. There seems to exist another group on the hill (270m alt) next to the eastern cairn group but the exact position is unknown.

Minami-Izu is close to Shimoda (下田) port that the US commodore M.C. Perry (1794-1858) succeeded to open up in 1854 while Japan has isolated since the 17th century.
