Modern Stone Circle etc in Bohemia
South Bohemian town of Volary lies on the foothills of splendid Šumava mountains. Modern stone circle north of the build-up area called simply Volary Menhirs was raised on occasion of the beltane feast in 2007.
The sort "modern circle" can be in this particular case a bit misleading. The explanatory board informs that all the stones are truly prehistoric origin. They were moved from an unspecified plateau in the Ore Mountains (NW of Czech R) to protect them before destruction during road construction.
The gneiss stones are said to have worked base and some of them have obvious horizontal grooves from the longstanding exposure to the rain. Construction as well as the moving of the stones was delibaretly organized by Mr. Polák, Ing/MEng, in cooperatin with municipal of Volary town on a volunteer basis.
The stone monument itself consists of 10 stones standing in a circle and the central one. Information board offers also explanation of the geographical alignment in solstice context.
I say, well done!
