Standing Stones in Bohemia
A quite interesting place called Medvědí vrch (The Bear Hill) can be found between the small western Bohemia town of Nýrsko and the Czech / German border. About 2 km from the border stands the picturesque forest chapel of St. Bernard from the 18th century. According to folk tale, a wild bear attacked the local man called Kohlbeck here.
After a tough fight, the man killed the beast and built a chapel as a thanksgiving. The chapel itself, standing in the most heart of "iron curtain" was pretty ruined during the socialist period and was gently restored in 90th.
About 60 metres south of the chapel lies large unusual group of rock and stones. The stones were obviously deliberately placed into U shape alignment, forming a kind of stone sanctum. The most probably it served as an ancient place of cult.
There are two smaller menhirs in the southern entrance of the place and one huge, two metres tall standing stone is dominating the centre.
In the 20th century, some of the stones were fitted with small metal sheets with German inscriptions to commemorate the victims of The Great War. These were destroyed in communist times and only small holes remained. Recently the new plaque was installed which again commemorates the victims of both wars but only in general now.
