Pyramid / Mastaba in South Korea
Almost 20km from the centre of Andong (안동) city, a few km from the border with Yeongju (영주) city, this fine 5 layered rock-piled square pyramid stands on a small flatland in a valley.Though it has a linga on its top, this might be a Buddhist proto-pagoda and one of the origins of Kumayama Iseki and other Japanese pyramids, curiously the pair of pyramid in a precinct of a Shinto shrine on Tsushima islands has the linga and yoni on their top. There is a Buddhist temple close by but no relation with this ancient site.
The name of the village Seoktam-ni (Soktap-ri) means "stone tower village". Korean people call these kinds of pyramids as 'pangdanhyeong jeokseoktap (방단형적석탑 = square layered stone-piled tower)', 'kedansik jeokseoktap (게단식적석탑 = stairs-styled stone-piled tower)' or 'pangdan jeokseok yugu (방단적석유구 = square layered stone-piled site)' . Designated as No. 343 of Cultural Material of Gyeongsang-Bugdo province
