Barrow Cemetery in Nord-Trøndelag
This barrow cemetery is located in and just outside the gardens of the Bakketun Folkehøyskole school. The school is a very old building and is also on the Norwegian list of cultural heritage. The school garden is located on a large square-shaped natural shaped terrace overlooking the Verdalen to the south. The location is very typical for iron age cemeteries and I am suspecting there has been several barrows and ancient artifact been removed when the school was constructed. The barrows are located along the edges of the garden that extends to the edge of the terrace where the terrain has a steep drop.
The edge of the terrain has large trees growing around it and some of the trees are on top of the barrows but even with the trees the barrows are very easy to see and the grass on them have been cut short almost to lawn size. I will describe the barrows in turn as I moved around the terrace. The cemetery consists of six large and beautiful iron age round barrows.
The barrow to the north west of the school is a beautiful round barrow with a diameter of 22 metres and 3 metres in height. The top seems a little flattened but even with the flat top the barrow is a beautiful round barrow.
The next barrow is at the south west corner of the terrace and is also a large and beautiful round barrow. The barrow is 15 metres in diameter and 2,75 metres in height.
To the south east is a line of three beautiful round barrow with the smallest barrow to the west. The first barrow is 13 metres in diameter and 1,5 metres in height. The grass on it is cut short and the barrow has a very nice shape. The next barrow 20 metres in diameter and almost 2 metres in height. It has some large trees growing on it and a clear ditch around the edges.
The last barrow is also 20 metres in diameter and 2,8 metres in height. It has also short grass and three large trees growing on top.
