Hillfort in Østfold
Trinborg is the most well preserved hill fort I have visited so far! The walls are more or less completely intact, at some places almost 2 metres tall and not too overgrown with moss or other vegetation. The hillfort is a beautiful example of a iron age hillfort.
One of the reasons why the fort is so well preserved could be that it is located quite far from nearby houses or villages. The fort is located on a small low hill of rocky outcrops and some spread out trees. While most hill forts in Norway are located on high steep natural hills, the small low hill the fort is located on doesn't elevate much in height from the surrounding landscape. It is still however free view over much of the surrounding forests.
The walls are well preserved and can be easily followed around the entire fort. It has three openings in the wall, one north, one south and one to the east. The one to the east could have been the original opening while the one in north and south could have been made in recent years. The fort is around 130 wide east to west and around 60 metres north to south. It is quite large compared to other hillforts in Norway.<
