Barrow Cemetery in Hedmark
This barrow cemetery consists of two medium sized round burial cairns laying in an open flat grassy field and four more cairns located a short distance away just outside the edge of the flat grass field inside a small birch tree forest. I didnt know about this location until I was driving by and saw the formations and checked with the kulturminnesøk database and they were indeed burials. All tge cairns are overgrown with grass and appear more like barrows than cairns. The cemetery is believed to be from old iron age or the migration period.
The two cairns laying in the open field are around 10 and 12 metres in diameter and around 1 metres in height. They have more and higher vegetation than the rest of the surrounding field. One of them have a clutch of large trees growing on top of it. Even with the vegetation the cairns are easy to see.
The four other cairns are arranged on a line oriented south-east to north west. They are just outside the grass field inside a small birch forest. The cairns havent been officially measured but I guess they are from 8 to 12 metres in diameter and 1,5 to 2,5 metres in height. They are covered in grass and birch trees but they are still easy to see and photograph. They appear to have a very pretty shape and minor damage. The cemetery could have been larger and some cairns and burials might have been damaged or erased during the plowing of the field.
