Barrow Cemetery in Østfold

This barrow cemetery consists of 35 round barrows and cairns and one three-pointed stone setting. The barrows are spread around on a large forest covered hill overlooking the agricultural landscape to the south and a lake to the north. The site is sadly covered with tight forest with large pine trees and smaller birch trees. The barrows are easy to find when I went there, but because of the vegetation it was difficult to get good photographs.

Two of the barrows have a diameter of 20 metres and around 2-3 metres in height, while the rest of the barrows range in size from 5 to 15 metres in diameter. The triangle shaped stone setting is located on the highest point of the hill, the sides are around 5 metres long and the corners are marked with larger stones. It has a small cairn in the middle. The stone setting is very overgrown with grass and brush and is difficult to find. The easyest cairn to find is very close to a house and is located at the edge of the site. It is around 18 metres in diameter and around 1 metre in height. Some of the round barrows is said to have clear circles of stones around their edges.
