The first version of the fortification was built between 1040 and 1060 of wood and became finally the largest log house recorded in Norway. The stone fort seen today was mainly built in 1200s during the rule of Haakon Haakonsson. However, there is still the discussion that Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson (ca. 910 – ca. 985/986) might have had a fortification at this site first.
In the 14th century, the central role as residence was shifted to Akershus Fortress in Oslo and Kongsgaarden became the residence of the Chancellor of Norway in the late Middle Ages.
Large parts of the ruins of Kongsgaarden were removed in 1890 when a locomotive workshop was built nearby.
Today, the remaining ruins of Kongsgaarden can be visited near the Old Town of Oslo. The area is called Middelalderparken as it also shows ruins of later Medieval buildings like the St. Mary`s Church with the rediscovered grave of Haakon V. (1270-1319), St. Hallvard`s Cathedral, or St. Clement`s Church.
