Barrow Cemetery in Akershus

Just north of the Nordby farm is a large iron age barrow cemetery. A footpath crosses the cemetery from south to North and here are also some information posters. Most of the barrows and cairns are inside a tight fir tree forest.

The barrow cemetery consists of 25 round barrows and burial cairns. All the cairns are overgrown with grass except a few in the centre of the cemetery and looks more like barrows than cairns, making it difficult to see the difference between them. It was also listed a elongated and one round stone setting but I could not find them. In the south east of the cemetery four large barrows are oriented on a line on a small hill. These are the easiest barrows to see in the cemetery.

The four barrows on a line to the south east are around 10-12 metres in diameter and 1 to 2 metres in height. All of them only have some few trees and mostly grass and moss covering them. They all have craters in the centre and built almost edge to edge.

Four large round cairns are located in a tight fir tree forest in the centre of the cemetery. Two of these are not overgrown with earth and can easily be identified as cairns. They are 9-11 metres in diameter and 1 to 1,5 metres in height.
To the north it is more cairns spread out in the forest but some of these can be clearing cairns from ancient farming fields.
