The rock art at Stein-Skarpsno is the only known rock art site in Hedmark with only animal figures. In all there are known 16 carvings of elk on this rock and some of the elk carvings are partially visible since parts of the rock have been falling off over the years. The carvings are so-called "hunting carvings" and is typical for stone age rock art.
The carvings are located on a huge boulder laying in a grassy and forested field overlooking lake Mjøsa. The carvings are on the North, South, East and South East side of the rock. In 1983 there was buldt a roof shelter over the boulder to protect the carvings and was in 2003 expanded in two directions and a wood fence with a gate and a information poster was also added. The boulder is found some distance from the road and access to the stone goes along a footpath from the road to the site. There are no posters close to the road.
The carvings have been dated to be from the stone age (6000 to 2000BC).
On the west side there is 6 carvings, 5 on the south side, three on the north side and two on the south east side. The carvings are around 30 to 50 cm in length and from 20 to 40 cm in height. All of the carvings are of elk and in some of the carvings there are lines inside that probably shows rib bones and inner organs. There are no carvings on the flat surface of the rock, the carvings are found only on the flat vertical sides of the boulder. The carvings have been painted in red and is easily visible.
