Hillfort in Vestfold
In the surrounding agricultural landscape Hjertås rises steeply. From the highest point 148 m.a.s.l. there is a wide view in all directions. Hjertås is actually a collection of hills with ravines and gorges between them.
Parts of the hill have been suitable as defense facilities, while some parts have come to lie outside the fortification itself. Several of the steep rock walls have been able to function as defense works alone. It is in partly narrow gorges that you find the remains of retaining walls, some of which have fallen down and lie in rows along the gorges. Along the west side you will find a ring of terraces, suitable as a path. One of the landowners has used this path to drive grazing animals up onto Hjertås after having first prepared the path somewhat. It cannot be ruled out that the path may have already been built in connection with the fort being in use, precisely to improve access for livestock, which would otherwise be difficult to drive up to the fort.
When following the footpath the path goes along a ravine with steep rocky sides and midway up to the hill the path goes over a wall blocking the ravine. The wall is more or less collapsed today but it is still tall, around 2 metres in height and 5 metres wide.
