Hillfort in Buskerud
Raukleiva or Slotteberget is the South Easter one of two paralell NNW-SSE oriented elongated rocky hilltops divided by a 30-40 metres wide and 15-20 metres deep ravine. They are very close to one another but it is not known whether they were in use at the same time or one is older than the other. I will describe them as two separate sites.
The fort is located on an elongated NNW-SE running ridge with a number of parallel rock outcrops separated by narrow gorges. In the NE and WSW, the ridge drops off in a steep mountain slope, in the ENE towards a 20-25m wide and 15-20m deep ravine, in the WSW towards a deep, narrow valley, Djupdalen. Towards the SE and NNW, the terrain are less steep. The fort wall is located around a knoll approximately in the middle of the ridge. From the SE, a 5m wide gap goes up towards the hill. In this gap is a wall, 10m long, 4 metres wide and 0,5 metres in height oriented NE-SW.
14m NW of this smaller wall is the main wall, 15 metres long NE-SW, 5-8m wide and 0.5-1.0m in height. On the SE-most half of the escarpment there is no continuous wall, only brick remains in individual rock. At the foot of the cliff is a collection of stones which may originate from a continuous wall at this location. The NNW half of the slope is fortified with a continuous wall, length 35m, width 1-4m, height 0.1-1.5m. Here, too, there is a lot of stone rubble along the foot of the cliff, so the wall was probably much stronger.
In the NNW, the wall meets with a NE-SSW running wall which blocks access from the NNW to the ridge. The wall here is well preserved, length 13m, width 8m, height 2-3.5m. A crater is found in the NE-most part of the wall, d 4m, depth 1-1.5m. 5m NNW of and parallel to this is a smaller front wall strongly projected, l 11-12m, width 3-4m, h 0.4-0.8m. To the NE, the castle area is bounded by a NNW-SE escarpment that drops in ledges towards the gorge that separates the two castle mountains
The inner area of the fort consists of a hill with NNW-SE running parallel rock ridges. It is very dry here, no natural occurrence of water. Overgrown with moss and pine.
All the castle walls consist of quarry stone of different sizes. In the NNW-SE going 20-25m wide and 15-20m deep gorge between the castle mountains and 15-20m NE of the NNW-most wall, there are two ramparts above the gorge. In the NNW, embankment of earth and quarry, l 10m, width 6-7m, height 1-2m. 15m SE of this ditto rampart, length 8-10m, width 5-6m, height 2-3m. Between these ramparts there is a depression, 15m NNW-SE, 10m ENE-SSW, depth 3-4m. Charcoal has been found here. The area is overgrown with ferns, moss and fir trees.
