Bockstein rock contains various small caves and abris. According to various and detailed archaelogical examinations the sites have been used by Homo neanderthalensis from 70.000 BP on and later by Homo sapiens. The largest cave is the Bocksteinhöhle which has several smaller entrances and an impressive large entrance facing the valley.

The latter is of modern origin. Bocksteinhöhle is in danger of collapsing (as signs tell). And actually it is also quite visible by several larger fallen blocks in its northern part. So be careful. Of course any cave visit requires some care and is risky to a certain extent.
The entrances are in a partly steep terrain which requires you to be sure-footed. The path leading upslope to the caves can be slippery at times.

A classic reference (in German) is:
R.Wetzel, Die Bocksteinschmiede mit dem Bocksteinloch, der Brandplatte und dem Abhang sowie der Bocksteingrotte, W. Kohlhammer Verlag, Stuttgart 1958.
