Stone Circle in Vestfold
Close to the main road going east-west is the remains of one of the oldest stone circles in Norway. Two of the stones are just 1 metre away from the main road.
Today the stone circle consists of three standing stones. Originally there have been at least five stones in the circle, possible more, but some of the stones have been lost in later years. The three remaining stones are placed in a triangle with one of the stones further away in a wheat field.
Two of the stones are around 70cm in height with the third around 1.2 metres in height. They appear rugged and weather-beaten. There are around 10 metres between them.
The circle was excavated in 1992 and 1996 and it revealed no less than ten cremation burials where the ashes were placed in small clay pots. The burials were dated to around 500BC. Outside the circle was found a female burial from the viking age.
