The Valby stones is a very special iron age stone setting. It consists of four large standing stones forming a rectangle. Between the stones there is a line of smaller round rocks. Only a part of the smaller stone setting is visible above the vegetation.
The rectangular stone setting also is divided into two "rooms", only one of the "rooms" has the standing stones in each of the four corners. The stone setting is located in a small hillside overgrown with low vegetation.
Today only three standing stones are visible, one of the originally four stones has fallen and is laying down on the ground. The tallest stone is around 2.3 metres in height and around 80cm wide. It has a cylindrical shape with a broken-off top. The smallest stone is around 1.2 metres in height and around 60cm wide, it also has a flat top.
The third stone is the most different. It is around 1.60m in height and around 70cm wide at the base. It has a rounded cross-section with very smooth sides. It has maybe been polished in ancient times. It is narrower at the top, making it almost looks like a standing egg. Another special feature is a large and deep cup-mark on the top of the stone.
Between two of the stones a corner of smaller stones is visible. I counted 9 stones laid out like a corner in the stone setting. They are laid out in a "L" shaped pattern. The fallen standing stone was originally set in the point of the "L".
Theories of this stone setting are many. Maybe it is simply only a grave monument but the presence of the cup-mark in one of the stones and the unique layout of the setting has led to theories that the site is an ancient ritualistic site or sacrificial site.
Around the stone setting are 10 round barrows. They are from 5 to 10 metres across and from 0.5 to 2 metres in height. The barrows have been dated to around 200-400AD.
