Barrow Cemetery in Vestfold

The barrow cemetery at Hedrum church is located in a good view from both sides of the river Lågen. It is a very common feature among barrow cemetery that they are located near or close to old roads and travelling routes or visible from the sea for boat travelling people.
The close proximity to the church is also very common and interesting. Old cultural sites were often chosen as sites for the churches in the middle ages. In Vestfold alone there are over 20 close connections between barrow cemeteries and churches.

The cemetery consists of 30 round barrows. It is believed that all old settlements had a cemetery close by. The barrows are located in a small forest close to the church. The trees are spread out and the short grass growing on the cemetery is regularly cut, making the barrows very easy to see and study.
The majority of the barrows are from 12 and up to 22 metres in diameter and from 1 to 3 metres in height. Some of them have clear ditches around the edges. All of them are round barrows, only a few have craters in the top. The site has been fenced in with a small gate to the cemetery in the south-east. Some of the barrows are very old, they have been dated from 500BC to 1000AD.
