Huaca Huantille
Huaca Huantille submitted by pab : General view of the Huaca - earlier news reports say that the area around the pyramid was, until recently, used for slum dwellings - it is now securely fenced and being excavated. It was at great risk from both developers and theft. The extremely dry conditions along the coastal strip have meant that the 'adobe' used in the construction of such structures lasts surprisingly well - Adobe bri... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Pyramid in Peru.
The adobe flat-topped pyramid was built in around 800 or 900 AD by the Ischma (Yschma), a culture that emerged after the fall of the Wari. Originally the pyramid covered over 11000 m3, but in the last century illegal squatters build homes there and a brick manufacturer "mined" the structure for raw materials.

In 2005 in an effort to improve development in the surrounding neighborhood, the families living on the site were evicted and resettled, and a perimeter fence was put up to deter further looting (which had already opened up tombs and exposed human remains,) Excavation efforts in some areas of the massive structure have both documented the architecture and restored some structures with an eye to attracting tourism.

Note: Pre-Incan mummy dug up in Lima, Peru at ancient pyramid in the center of a modern slum.

Huaca Huantille
Huaca Huantille submitted by pab : Adobe bricks at Huaca Huantille. Stacked alongside the pyramid during the current excavation, these adobe bricks give a good idea of the material used in many parts of Peru. Adobe bricks are made of earth with a fairly high clay content and straw and then only sun-dried, rather than being kiln dried. Only the very dry conditions make this suitable for such significant structures. Photo: Pete... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Huaca Huantille
Huaca Huantille submitted by pab : This ancient pyramid looks rather incongruous in the middle of Lima's modern streets - no longer any sign of the shanty town & slums mentioned in earlier reports, so the city has clearly worked hard to protect and present the structure. Unfortunately, as we were only in the area for 1 day (the universal closed on Mondays!), we could only see the structure from the pavement, but there is a sma... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Pre-Incan mummy dug up in center of Lima, Peru by bat400 on Sunday, 09 August 2009
(User Info | Send a Message)
Submitted by coldrum --- A pre-Incan mummy and eight other skeletons have been dug up from under what used to be a shanty town in the middle of Peru's capital, archeologists said on Wednesday. Urban squatters had lived on the Huaca Huantille ruins for years, unaware they contained an ancient burial site.

Archeologist Roberto Quispe working on the excavation said the bones were from the Ychsma civilization dating from between 1000 and 1400 AD.
The burial site was found after city officials and Peru's national institute of culture kicked out 50 homeless families that had built a shantytown on the ruins, and later started excavations.

Hundreds of archeological sites are scattered across Lima, and in some cases Catholic churches or mansions were built on top of Inca ruins after Spanish conquistadors arrived in Peru.

Many huacas, as Peruvians call them, were paved over or raided by tomb robbers during centuries of urbanization. More recently some huacas, especially in wealthier neighborhoods, have been restored and museums have been built to display tools, baskets and pottery found at the sites.
