Museum in the Pueblo Libre district of Lima, Peru.
The museum contains thousands of artifacts and displays covering the history of human occupation in what is now Peru. Highlights include the original Raimondi Stele and Tello Obelisk from Chavín de Huantar.
The museum displays artifacts grouped by culture, and in roughly chronological order. In addition to artifacts themselves there are models, explanations of metallurgy, artifacts and replicas grouped in dioramas, and poster or photo essay displays.
The museum is housed in an expansive colonial building located on Plaza Bolivar in the Pueblo Libre district of Lima. The wing of the museum covering the colonial to modern periods contains substantial artifacts and displays on the Liberators, Bolivar and San Martin, and the period immediately following Independence from Spanish rule.
