San Agustin Parque Arqueologico
San Agustin Parque Arqueologico submitted by SolarMegalith : One of the sculptures in "Bosque de las Estatuas" ("Forest of statues") close to the entrance of the archaeological park (photo taken on July 2003). Site in Columbia (Vote or comment on this photo)
Archaeological park of San Agustin is one of the most important and most famous concentrations of prehistoric monuments in South America. San Agustin civilization flourished from 6th century BC to 12th century AD, forming magnificent culture remains of which we can see in San Agustin and in over 30 sites around the town.

One of the most important monuments in San Agustin archaeological park are the burial cists constructed of andesite and basalt stones. Some of them are very similar to the European dolmens, however upright stones of some of them are carved into statues. Many of the cists were originally covered with mounds of 30-45 m diameter. These megalithic tombs were probably burials of the most important people in society of San Agustin culture - leaders, warriors or priests.

The second and perhaps most significantly represented group of monuments are the stone sculptures in form of statue menhirs. Near the entrance to the archaeological park there's a forest called "Bosque de las Estatuas" ("Forest of the statues") in which 39 among the finest sculptures of San Agustin culture are gathered (removed from their original positions). They represent various beings, among them both humans and animals. There is evidence that at least some of the statues were originally painted, mainly with red and yellow colours.

The archaeological park itself is a fantastic example of a well-exposed and maintained site. It's located West from town of San Agustin, easy to reach both on foot and by car.

Note: Ancient statues replaced with cardboard cut-outs, as originals are moved to capitol museum -- or not?

Minor complaint.

It would help if the Megalithic Portal News Summary gave a more detailed location for ALL its entries,
eg
This figured as :- "Subject: South America." and not as "Colombia." Others with foreign names sometimes do not have the location listed at all.

The Topic titles seen in the New Summary make use of the "Topic Titles" available in the website, and the News Summary is generated automatically from them.
The details are found on the website itself (as you see here.)
I'm uncertain the level of difficulty involved in having the New Summary load the field for "Country," but we can look into it.

Agreed, our topic headings could be improved. Showing the country would be better, I should be able to change that easily.

Colombia: Ancient statues replaced with cardboard cut-outs by bat400 on Thursday, 16 January 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
A sign at San Agustin park informs visitors that the pre-Columbian statues - some of which are 2,000 years old - have been taken to Colombia's national museum in the capital, Bogota. But NTN 24 television reports they are actually being kept at a local museum. An official from the park told the TV that the statues will be moved to Bogota "later".

Either way, "this looks like a prank... and tourists are mad", NTN 24 reports. "To me, it is a really big fraud," says one visitor to the park.

The San Agustin archaeological park is home to the largest group of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in South America, and is a designated UNESCO world heritage site. Statues from the park date back to the 1st - 8th centuries AD.
