North Salem Dolmen
North Salem Dolmen submitted by aluta : This famous boulder, in New York State, was featured on the cover of an album by Robin Williamson, of Incredible String Band fame (fame?). My suspicions that it is a natural feature were put aside when I finally got to see it in person. The stone holding it up are very similarly shaped to one another, and no stones nearby resemble them at all. The whole structure is aesthetically pleasing from al... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Possible Dolmen in New York State. A 16 x 14 x 10 foot pink granite boulder balance on four or five similarly colored, shaped and placed limestone supports. Until I saw it close up, I assumed it was a glacial erratic.

Having seen it and having seen numerous other pedestaled or propped stones in prominent places on the eastern mountains, I now incline toward the theory that it is man-made, but passionate arguments are made on both sides. Before making a judgement, it would be wise to examine the boulder and its supports for yourself.

A seldom mentioned feature of the rock is a pronounced striping, most visible in some photos. Some have even speculated that the stone was once painted.

Links here and here give different perspectives on the site.

This is the stone featured on the Robin Williamson album American Stonehenge.

I live in South Western Connecticut and have visited the balanced rock many times since early 1990's. My first trip was part of a group that included several researches as well as a noted Geologist who brought a
magnetometer he borrowed from the University he was working at. The readout was supposedly completely anomalous at the Rock and reduced as you walked away from it.

I am an energy practitioner and can affirm there is significant vibe around the rock.
From the Rock going north we find the stone chambers/"root cellars" which are very fascinating as they are clearly not colonial. The stone chambers fan out from this southern Rock point.
Cheers
Scott Lane

I grew up within walking distance of Balanced Rock. It's similarity to Arthur's Stone or Maen Cetti on the Gower peninsula in Wales is remarkable. If someone did indeed place Balanced Rock there the same way the Welsh dolmens were, it would have been a miracle of engineering to have moved it over such wooded, rocky hills. When I was in North Salem High School in 1986, a couple of friends skipped out of school, went for a joy ride in their car and ended up crashing into Balanced Rock. Needless to say, the car was totalled but Balanced Rock did not move.

I never said anything about an inscription or Celtic people! The native people here had their own traditions of stone work which are just becoming commonly known, although the historical record shows that many writings of Europeans early to the eastern seaboard commented on it.

Have you been to the site and seen the similarly-shaped support stones and how the boulder is seated on them? I agree that dolmen may be the wrong word--maybe flying stone, as it would be called in Finland or the adjacent parts of Russia. But almost certainly manmade.

Re: North Salem Dolmen by Anonymous on Monday, 07 March 2011
As much as I would like to beleive this is a dolmen, the faux celtic inscription was a dead givaway. If this were true, surely archeologists would be deciphering this inscription and the general public would have some knpwledge. Not to mention the simple truth, what would an ancient group of explorers be doing in the North Salem area? There seems to be no major river or natural landmark that would draw any foriegn peoples to the area. I have to side with geology, this is an 'eratic' rock, and still worhwhile checking out.

Having visited the site, there is a swamp nearby, which on an old Hagstrom atlas is shown as a lake. So in the past, there was a pond nearby, it has just filled in due to due to time. As a side note, there is very little cell phone service in the area, just so you know.

I just went back on June 21, and the end of the 'pond' closest to Balanced Rock is filled with plume grass. The other end is open water, I don't know how deep (inches maybe??) and how much is boot sucking mud (feet maybe??)
It was a drizzly morning. The stripes are from the uneven way rain drains off the rock, providing different environments for what is growing on it. I noticed that there is something new to me-deep mahogany colored stuff that grows on rocks first, before the lichens.
In another park nearby, there is a bear petroglyph. It looks like the part behind the 'neck' spalled off. There are similar grooves on the other end, but again, portions have spalled off.

It is possible to see the boulder on the aerial photograph if you know where to look. Move in to about 3 notches from the closest resolution. Look for where Keeler Lane meets Titicus Road, and notice a whitish house just below the intersection. Close in on that house and you'll see its grey barn just below and to the left of it. Next to that barn, and not far from the road, there's a greyish mass with a shadow showing under it. That's the boulder from above.

Not a natural stone/glacial erratic as someone has unfortunately chosen to list it. That becomes clear if you learn the context of perched boulders in the northeast and especially if you examine the supports and the boulder itself in situ.
