Standing Stone (Menhir) in Co. Down

This Standing Stone was erected in the 1930's or 40's as a memorial to Major
Richard Gustavus Heyn owner and Captain of the Ulster Steamship Company.

A piece of roughly shaped granite over 4m high by 1.4 wide and 0.8 thick this is an impressive lump of rock, the location on an eastward promontory (partly pasture) is superb if windy.

This is the stone I was trying to identify when I found this site.

On the same promontory as the stone are a couple of other sites, on the beach is a holy well which is still in use and there is an 800 year old graveyard on the main road (DOW007003), this is also supposed to be one of St.Patrick's landing sites.

On a personal note the woman who lives in the house next to the grave yard (which I was recording for the NIEA) reported me to the police as a 'suspicious person' and went berserk when she found out she could not stop me. I really wonder about some people.

If you are looking for this site via satnav you'll need to enter it as Millisle as Templepatrick is a town 40 odd miles away.
