Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Ceredigion

Cross-slab with Latin and Ogham inscriptions in the church of St David (original dedication to St Fyllteg) at Llanarth on the A487 some 8 miles north-west of Lampeter, Ceredigion. The slab stands at 1.47 metres high with two inscriptions dating from the 5th-6th century CE, while the inscised Latin cross is thought to date from the 9th-10th century CE ?

On the front of the stone a plain Latin cross, while the incised Latin inscription runs vertically down the opposite face and reads as:- GURHI RT or GURHI RST - the translation of which is 'Gurhirt' or 'Girhirst'. The Gurhirt mentioned could be the name of an Irish chieftain. On the left edge of the stone reading from the bottom upwards an Ogham inscription (thought to be a bit dubious by some historians) reads as: -R-N-L-G-S which is interpreted as 'Trenalugos' perhaps a Romano-British name. The Ogham notches have suffered some damage and are now quite worn.

For more information see Coflein NPRN 400370. The Journal of Antiquities also features an entry for this cross-inscribed stone - see the fourth entry down on their page for Some Inscribed Stones in Wales.
