A new exhibition has recently been opened, called The 'Sights and Sounds of Newton Abbot'.
On display is the famous prehistoric 'Kingsteignton Idol', which is usually on show at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. (That building is currently closed for renovation and refitting and should be open next year.) Meanwhile, the owners - a local clay company - have loaned it to Newton Abbot Museum for this exhibition.
(See website for more details, also the RAMM site page on the Megalithic Portal.)
Newton Abbot museum has a special room for Great Western Railway history enthusiasts. [Not exact quote:] "By the time they leave, visitors will be able to understand the principles of Brunel's Atmospheric railway, which was built between Exeter and Newton Abbot. They can also 'have a go' in a working signal box."
Newton Abbot was once a major railway station on the South Devon Railway.
There is also a model of John Lethbridge's 'Diving Engine', a fascinating diving machine invented by this local wool merchant in the early 1700s. (See 'Home' page on website for more.)
