Castroserracín submitted by ernar : Green undergrowth covers what looks like the central chamber of the tumulus. The vestigial corridor is formed by the two almost fully buries stones that can see closer to the camera. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairn in Castilla y León

Commanding the small village of Castroserracín from a nearby hill, you can find the remains of what looks like and ancient megalith. With a significant wedge-shaped tumulus 20 mts long and 15 meters across, some features can still be identified: A depression in the middle which looks like a burial chamber with 5 orthostats still present, what looks like two parallel orthostats almost buried forming a corridor and the ruin of a small building - probably added recently - west of the chamber. The vestigial corridor points straight to the east, where a depression between mountains can be found in the far horizon.

The site boasts other interesting features, like the remains of two concentric walls surrounding the tumulus and what looks like a settlement or field system of some sort to the south. I have been unable to get data regarding dates and purposes of the whole complex.

Finding it is a nice challenge. Locating the town of Sepúlveda will be easy. From there, follow the SG-241 until you reach the little village of Castroserracín which will be at the right side of the road. Cross the whole village and take a road turning sharply to the right just at the end of Castroserracín. This road (which does not appear on my Michelin Guide) will lead you through a small cluster of trees, after that the road will climb the hill and an earthen track will appear to your right once you reach the top. Follow it for 300-400m and the tumulus will be seen on the top of the hill to your right.

Once you climb there, enjoy. The views and the scenery are breathtaking!
