Alta-Falisa visited on 8th Jun 2012 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 4 The closest you can come by car is the car park (64.263337, -21.117194). From there, a walkway leads you as far as the church and old cemetery. The path to the valley supposed to be just on top of the dividing line Europe-America (where two tectonic plates pull the Atlantic floor apart) is asphalted at first, then more rocky (and you are not supposed to go that far... Naughty, naughty, naughty, I did !). Try to come before 09.00 : there are still hardly any tourists and, at 09.00 on the dot, you will attend the raising of the flag.

Althing
Althing submitted by DrewParsons : The Law Rock or Lögrétta is a high rock on European side of the chasm and was the site from which laws were passed and trials conducted. April 2010. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Althing is the original seat of the first recorded parliament in the world which commenced at the Lögrétta or Law Rock in 930 AD. The site is located in the central Icelandic valley which is being pulled apart by the earth's tectonic plates at this point. The largest of the crack in the land is called the Almannagjá, a deep chasm between the European and American tectonic plates.

The unusual geography of the site led to it being used as the first parliament site for the people of Iceland. The Law Rock or Lögrétta is a high rock on European side of the chasm and was the site from which laws were passed and trials conducted.

Today it is a national park with nearby car parking and easy foot access.

Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupting (Althing)
Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupting (Althing) submitted by DrewParsons : The raw material from where all your megaliths flow!! Photographed during the April 2010 lava eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano to the east of this site. I was lucky enough to spend an hour circling over the lava fountains in a light plane with an Icelandic farmer and two others before the ash eruptions occurred. Althing
Althing submitted by pab : Site in Iceland By way of contrast to Drew's photo from April 2010, this picture is of the same location, but looking at the Rock and flag from the other direction. This was taken in July 2002, when Iceland was really in bloom with wild flowers. The Icelanders have a very keen pride in having had their democratic 'parliament' since such an early period.
