Standing Stone (Menhir) in East Lothian

This standing stone is featured on the Ancient Stones: A Guide to Standing Stones and Stone Circles in the South of Scotland - see their entry for Piper's Stone, The Green, Dirleton, which includes a description, directions for finding the stone with nearby parking, folklore and fieldnotes.

This stone is also recorded as Canmore ID 56741, the original information for the 1853 OS Name Book telling us this is: "a standing stone situated in an open green in the centre of Dirleton village. It is 3' high, about 15" broad and 10" thick. When locally spoken of it is most commonly called the "Piper's Stone"; on the property maps it is called the "Cross", and the factor Mr Wily says that the legend of the piper is mere conjecture, supported only by local tradition. The date or purpose for which this stone was erected is wholly unknown."

A more recent entry from 1975 says that "all that remains of this stone or cross is a stump barely 0.2m above the ground. On plan, it is triangular, 0.4m x 0.4m x 0.2m."

The Ancient Stones adds that the stone is set in a circle of granite cobbles; early records state is used to be 0.75m tall.
