A cave on the shore of Utah's Great Salt Lake has been found to hold hundreds of dice and other ancient gambling pieces. And archaeologists who discovered the carved sticks, hoops, dice and darts – which date from the 13th century – believe there could be up to 10,000 more of the gaming pieces in the cave.
It is thought they belonged to an obscure indigenous people who lived along the shores of the Great Salt Lake at the time, known as the Promontory Culture. In the past, clothing including carefully made moccasins along with piles of butchered bison and elk have been found in the cave in ongoing excavations since the 1930s. But the discovery of the 800-year-old gambling equipment is providing new insights into the way these people lived.
Rather than seeking out a meagre existence from the land, the Promontory People appear to have lived in relative luxury, with ample spare time for playing and gambling.
Archaeologists also believe gambling may have played a crucial role in helping people in this culture form new relationships and bonds with each other. Professor Jack Ives, an archaeologist at the University of Alberta, said the number and diversity of gaming artefacts found in the cave was unparalleled in western North America.
Speaking to Western Digs, he said: 'This to me can be seen as the intersection of three factors: remarkable preservation, a cave population that was thriving during its 20 to 40-year stay, and a real cultural predilection for gaming activities.
