Casa Grande - Ball Court, Pinal County, Arizona. Part of the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. This structure (visible in Flash Earth aerial views) has been identified as an area for playing a ball game.

This is due to similarities of these oval "amphitheaters" at Hohokam sites to similar structures found farther south as part of Aztec and Mayan cultures. In those more southern areas simple playing areas co-exist with more formal, stone-built ball courts.

I am unsure what other archaeological evidence there is for a presumption that a ball game was played in these areas. But, these oval, flat floored structures (fairly similar in size) are found at many Hohokam village sites. What are now Arizona and New Mexico are the most northern locations for these structures in the Americas.

Occupancy dates for the Hohokam settlement from 900 - 1400 AD.
