Hope (1893) in his work on Holy wells says ‘a holy well formerly existed here, which it was the custom every year to adorn with garlands, to the accompaniment of music and dancing, in honour of its patron, St Augustine, who “As early bards do telle/ Gave to Bromwych this holy welle”. The well derived its name from the monks of Sandwell’. There is some debate over its genuineness but it is a rare survival whether it was dedicated to St. Augustine or not, such a sizeable spring must have given the village its name.
The site is now a grey stone and concrete structure consisting of three chambers, only two with clear water and a basin with its water is very clear and fast flowing. It appears on the park map and is well looked after.
