Salt's Hole
Salt's Hole submitted by 4clydesdale7 : The Victorian wellhead (Vote or comment on this photo)
This pretty (but a little 'run-down') Well and Wellhead lies about 400m to the west of the hamlet of Purton Stoke (just off the B4553 Purton to Cricklade Road) and is approached along an old Drovers Road (now called Stoke Common Lane) - it is claimed that this is the only traditional healing well in Wiltshire to have developed (albeit very briefly) into a spa.

The Well has a fascinating history recounted in the paper by Katharine M Jordan 'Seven Wiltshire Wells and their Folklore' set out on the University of Bath website - as so often reported elsewhere for other wells, it has a chequered history of disputes between poor local village residents claiming long usage and rich but 'mean' landowners seeking to make a profit - all great reading!! Thankfully peace reigns for the moment

A very easy site to reach, it is worth a visit
