Goose Stones submitted by hamish : There are quite a lot of large "Sarsen" type stones here, all possible remnants of neolithic structures. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Several Standing Stones on Chastleton Common in Oxfordshire.

It is said that the Goose stones are petrified Geese turned into stone for grazing Chastleton Common illicitly. Their 'owner' or 'guardian', an old lady used to drive them down Grey Goose Lane to graze. Despite being warned about this she continued the practise and the stones are all that were left of her Geese.

What happened to her is unknown, the stones however have been dragged away to adorn a local landowners garden. All that remains are a few loose oolites scattered across the common, and a possible monolith. The location commands a good view of the valley to the north west of the site and is located close to Adlestrop hill site of several now overgrown and abused long barrows.

Access: Across a public footpath in a field not far from a gate and cattle grid. Text contributed by Tom Wilson.

I was about to sign up and add a photo that I took at this location two days ago, and then I saw Michael Garlick's blatantly political image, the most prominent element of which is our local MP, along with this description:

"Taken on the day of the 2017 General Election. Robert Courts won the 2016 by-election, when David Cameron resigned. His majority over Laetisia Carter, the Labour candidate was 21,241."

Seriously?
Is this site really about promoting people's personal political celebrations?

Hi RB, please could you post a link to the political image? Which page did you see it on? I think there may be a glitch in the Matrix going on, we don't host anything like that as a matter of course.
I'll ask for this to be looked into and get back to you. Rune

    Hello RB.
The photo being referred to is a thumbnail pulled in from Geograph http://www.geograph.org.uk/, as the caption just above them says.
We add their photos automatically and don't have any control over them.
I can't see anything controversial or offensive in it though to be honest.
But it's not one of ours and not something we would do.
I look forward to seeing your photos.
    Thanks
    Andy

From the small gated, and signposted private, road crossing the common opposite Chastleton House, can be seen many lumps of rock sticking up out of the well shorn grass. There seems to be lots of stones scattered about all over the place, some of which may be natural outcroppings, although some are clearly free standing lumps of stone.

It was raining horribly when I visited new years eve 2006, so I just had a quick look around and gave up easily without a proper look around. Its a place probably worthy of a further exploration at some time.

Quandary, if its a common, how can it be private land ?
