Anne T visited on 8th Nov 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Anglo Saxon Stones, St. Cuthbert's Billingham: We’d arranged to meet the verger, at the church at 12 noon. We arrived 10 minutes early, and found the south door didn’t have a keyhole, so wondered how we’d get in. It turns out there’s an entrance from the north side of the church. We wandered around the tower looking for the Anglo Saxon cross pieces built into the church tower. Some of these took some spotting, then we heard the verger calling us in. The church is large, a fusion of 11th century and 1930s extension. The churchyard is huge – a surprise for somewhere so industrial as Billingham, but then this is Billingham Green. I much enjoyed this visit. The verger spent over an hour taking us round, and took delight in showing us the stones, even one hidden behind a noticeboard against the west wall.

Ancient Cross in County Durham

Sited just off Billingham Green, this church is located in a tranquil oasis away from the heavy industry of surrounding Billingham and Teeside. The church guide says there has been a church here since before the 8th century; tradition has it that the bones of St Cuthbert were brought here on their journey from Lindisfarne to Durham, hence the dedication to St. Cuthbert. In restoration work, a 7th century inscribed stone was found - this is now in the British Museum.

The current church tower dates from the 10th century, and the lines of the original nave can be seen within the current church (note the archway and wall over what was originally the east end of the church; this now forms the division between the old church and the 1930s extension).

The Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture (Vol 1) records 16 stones for Billingham, starting with Billingham 01, some of which have been lost, some are 'out of bounds' in the clock tower (entry into which is described as precarious), but there is still much to see and appreciate. Some are in the external walls of the tower. One stone, not recorded by the AS Corpus, was hidden behind a noticeboard at the west end, and revealed to us by the very welcoming and helpful verger.

The church is kept locked due to vandalism, but phone the Parish Office (details available on the A Church Near You website) to arrange a visit.

St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham)
St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham) submitted by Anne T : This fragment is located above an archway near the organ (next to a huge crack in the masonry joining the modern extension to the old church). The verger told us this is medieval. Included here for completeness. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham)
St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham) submitted by Anne T : This inscribed stone is not recorded by the AS Corpus, and is built into the northern section of the interior west wall of the nave, currently hidden by a noticeboard. The church plan shows this as an Anglo Saxon stone, but the page giving details of it were missing from my copy! (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham)
St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham) submitted by Anne T : The light was pouring through the window, which made the reverse face (A) of AS Corpus Billingham 14 a llttle difficult to photograph, even trying flash to counteract the strong sunlight. This stone dates from the second half of the ninth century and can be found next to AS Corpus Billingham 15 on a window ledge in the south wall of the nave.

St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham)
St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham) submitted by Anne T : This stone, recorded as AS Corpus Billingham 16, can be found on the interior west wall of the south porch, together with a number of other inscribed stones (mainly fragments of grave slabs and a piscina). It dates from the 11th century.

St Cuthbert's Church (Billingham) submitted by Anne T : This stone, recorded as AS Corpus Billingham 10, is too worn to be dated properly, but can be found built into the centre of the south face of the external wall of the tower.
