Glaisdale Low Moor North East
Glaisdale Low Moor North East submitted by johndhunter : Very basic sketch map (not to scale) showing those marker stones denoted with the prefix “N” on the north eastern part of Glaisdale Low Moor and some of the other marker stones in this general area. N1 - Marker Stone at NZ 76222 05592 N2 & N3 – Historical OS Maps put these stones at NZ 76309 05537 & 76359 05527 respectively. I was unable to locate these stones. N4 – Pair of marke... Small and insignificant though they may look, this line of what was originally three stones plus a pair of stones would have been of some importance in earlier times. They mark the route and guide the traveller across a very swampy part of Glaisdale Swang, the source at this point of several springs which eventually join together to form Broad Carr Beck which in itself eventually joins the River Esk.

These stones can be seen marked on the 1895 OS map HERE When the map opens, read if required then close the pop up box which obscures it, zoom in to the top left section of the map to where it says Glaisdale Swang, the stones are marked as such on the route which runs through the word “Swang”. These stones I have then denoted with the prefix “N” on the uploaded sketch map. I was unable to locate stones N2 & N3 at the site itself, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are not there, just that I could not find them. N1 was found at NZ 76222 05592 and the pair of stones N4 at NZ 76438 05513 which is the map reference given for this site.

At one time the track would have run between these stones, guiding the traveller across the swampy ground, not so today the track runs a little further to the south. (Vote or comment on this photo)
