The oldest manmade object in London and a standing stone that dwarfs our own. Shipped to Britain by the people of Egypt to celebrate our victory over Napoleon, the voyage was extremly hazardous and six men died. Full information here.
This monument is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1066169. The Journal of Antiquities also includes a page for this obelisk - see their entry for Cleopatra’s Needle, Victoria Embankment, London W.C.2. The Journal includes some old photographs, a description and discussion of its origins and purpose, and includes reference sources and related websites which give more information. The Journal includes a quotation from Arthur Mee (1949) which says that "It weighs 166 tons, being ten times as heavy as the biggest stone at Stonehenge".
