Vilnes church on Atløyna island, western Norway has 3 huge and beautiful standing stones inside the churchyard. They all have the shape of large massive standing slabs and are well known locally. A local legend also includes the standing stones and some trolls!

Here is the legend: Jorunn in Alden was to get married in Vilneskyrkja. Then the trolls Trond in Alden, Sjur in Atløynipa and Mass in Einingsfjellet will have thrown large boulders to smash the church. But the stones did not hit and remained standing in the field west of the church. It is a strange coincidence that the three headstones together with the church form a sign of the cross.

Spotlights have also been installed next to the stones to light them up at night. The stones form a triangle with the point to the south around the church.

Standing stone number one stands 11 metres north of the church door. The stone is 2.2 metres in high, 1.8 metres wide and 20 cm thick. The flat sides face north and south. It slopes slightly towards the north. The sides are smooth and the stone has a flat, almost cut-off top. The northern side of this stone is covered with moss but the south side seems to have much less.

Standing stone number two stands 14 metres west of the church door. It is 3 metres high, 1.5 m wide at the base and 10 cm thick. It is the tallest stone of the three. The top seems to be rounded. The flat sides face north and south. The northern flat side of both these stones is covered with moss.

The standing stone number 3 was restored to its original place in the period 1826-38. It now stands 18 metres south south west of the church door. It is 2.2 metres in height, 1.5 metres wide and 10 cm thick. The flat sides are faced north west and south east. The top seems to be rounded.
