Halvdan's Mound

Round Barrow in Buskerud
Halvdan`s mound is a huge round barrow located in a huge flat grain field close to the farm of Stein in Ringerrike.

The mound is around 55 metres in diameter and around 5 metres in height. Two deep craters have been dug into the mound from the north side. One of them was probably already made in the iron age. The mound is covered in grass and a few large trees.
The mound is in the middle of a grain field so no close-up photos were possible.
The mound is called Halvdan`s mound because it is said that it belonged to Halvdan the black, the forefather of the Norwegian kings and father of Harald Fairhair, the first king of Norway. When he died in a drowning accident, the sagas tells that several districts or areas were fighting over his corpse because they all wanted to bury him in their home district, believing it would give good years of harvest and bring luck to their areas. The conclusion was that the corpse were divided into four parts and each part buried in a barrow in the different districts. It is said that the head of Halvdan lies buried in this barrow.

A georadar survey was performed some year ago and it shows a formation shaped like a ship or longboat around 20 metres long and around 7 metres wide laid out north-south inside the mound. Some test drilling was also performed and it showed wood pieces inside the mound. The mound is probably a ship-burial.
