Barrow Cemetery in Aust-Agder
The barrow cemetery at Fevik is divided in two main parts, one to the west and another to the east of the Fevik school.
The east part of the site has been restored and made into a public park with the vegetation regularly cut down and with only some fir trees spread around. There are also picnic tables and footpath s criss-crossing the site between the barrows. The barrows are very easy to see and observe! This part of the site consists of 15 barrows. 2 are long barrows and 13 are round barrows. 10 of the round barrows are clearly marked and easy to see. The largest barrow is around 20 metres in diameter and around 3 metres in height. The rest of the barrows are from 7 to 19 metres in diameter and from 0,5 to 3 metres in height. Most of them have beautiful rounded shapes and clear ditches around the edges. Many of the barrows are quite beautiful! The barrows consists of sandy earth and some of them have craters on top.
The east part of the cemetery consists of 11 round barrows. This part of the cemetery is more overgrown than the east part by birch trees, small trees and brush. This part is a little more difficult to observe than the east part. The barrows range in size from 8 to 20 metres in diameter and 0,75 to 2 metres in height. Four of the barrows are very close to private homes and at the edge of some gardens. It is said that some of the barrows have standing stones on the top but when I visited the site I could not find them. I guess they have fallen down and been overgrown.
