From the interpretive sign: The origin of the stone lies in the distant past, 5000 to 3500 years ago during Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
No traces of prehistoric remains were found around the base of the stone, but two Bronze Age cist burials containing food vessels were unearthed close by, suggesting it may have been to focus for ritual activity.
For more information see Canmore ID24761 which tells us that the stone is about 100 yards north of Doune Railway Station. Traditionally said to be a Roman Signal stone. An evaluation in September 2008 could not identify if the stone had been relocated "and has been in its present position since at least 1862."
The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this standing stone - see their entry for Trysting Stone, Doune, Perthshire, which gives directions for finding this site together with an image of the 1866 OS map showing the location of the stone, brief archaeology & history and local folklore.
