Anne T visited on 6th Sep 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Norham Village Cross: (Before looking at this cross, we stopped off to look at the Victorian Jubilee Fountain just over the border in Scotland, which still has its original pump handle, although this doesn't work). We passed this cross several times today, but with it being immediately next to the children’s playground, there were children sitting on its lower steps, and propping their bicycles against it. When we passed by on the way back from seeing the holy wells at Upsettlington, there was fortunately no children around it, so we stopped to take photographs, much to the amusement of two ladies passing by who stopped to watch. It was nice to see the cross still very much part of village life today. Whilst the top part of this cross looks Victorian/relatively recent, the steps look much, much older and are very worn.

Ancient Cross in Northumberland

This village cross is still very much the centre of village life in Norham today, with the children's playground immediately next door, and we needed to wait until mums and children had gone for tea before we could get any photographs of it without people sitting around its base (nice to see it so much a part of the community still).

Recorded as Historic England List ID 1154830 and Pastscape Monument No. 1331, which tells us this cross has a medieval base comprising six high, circular steps and a Victorian stone cross 6ft 6ins high, which was restored in 1877 and a weather vane added on top. The Victorian cross is made up of clustered columns with a tall, elongated pyramidal top. It is grade II listed.

Vistors interested in castle may also like to see the largely 12th century Norham Castle at NT 90570 47562, which is in the care of English Heritage and free to go into between 10am and 5pm, April to September each year.

The worn, tall, medieval steps can be clearly seen, as can the unusual fluted columns and elongated pyramidal top of the Victorian cross, with weather vane, of course!
