Anne T visited on 20th May 2018 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Cross base, St. Hilda's Church, Lucker: We had a walk around the churchyard, but were unable to find a cross base amongst the gravestones. We wandered down as far as the river, Waren Burn, which flowed to the east of the church. Not finding anything, we wandered into the church. There was no guide book, but there were laminated sheets detailing the history of the church and St. Hilda, which I photographed. Having found the cross base on Pastscape, with the grid reference, I was very reluctant to give up the search. It did indeed take some finding, as it was completely buried under ivy in a very overgrown section of the churchyard. Typically, not having the gps with us when we needed it, common sense said that the cross base should ideally be at the eastern end of the church at the highest point of land before it started to drop down to the river below. I had to clamber over brambles and force my way through trees to get to this part of the churchyard. The cross base was next to the grave of a lady called ‘Janet’.

This part of the graveyard has been neglected over a number of years. We thought the church might have made more of their socket stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Northumberland

The history of the church (summarised from the laminated sheet in the church) says that "it is believed that six churches have stood on this site. The first was an all wood church, of which there are few historical details. The second was a Saxon church of wood and stone. The third was Norman, built about the same time as the priory on Holy Island). The fourth was of Early English design, but very little was known about it. The fifth was Georgian (1767 to 1873), often in very poor state of repair due to shoddy construction and a landslip. The sixth church is the one we see now, completed in 1874."

Sited to the west of Waren Burn, a brief history is given in Pastscape Monument No. 7640, where brief mention is made of the cross base: "At NU 15303033 is the socket stone of a medieval churchyard cross."

A walk around the original and new extension to the churchyard didn't reveal the whereabouts of the cross base, so we went hunting in the undergrowth where the ground rises at the north eastern end of the church. Eventually, I spotted a square mound, completely covered in ivy, immediately next to the gravestone of a lady called "Janet". Pulling the strands of ivy away revealed this sadly neglected cross base.

Inside the church there is a lovely architectural fragment of a pelican, nestled on the window ledge on the northern wall at the western end.

St Hilda's Church (Lucker)
St Hilda's Church (Lucker) submitted by Anne T : This lovely architectural fragment of a pelican is tucked high up on a window ledge on the northern wall, western end of the church. Pastscape and the brief history of the church both make reference to some fragments of the Norman chapel which were found during one of the rebuilding phases in 1766 or 1874. St Hilda's Church (Lucker)
St Hilda's Church (Lucker) submitted by Anne T : By the north eastern end of the church, the ground starts to rise, and the oldest grave stones can be found in this section. With no sign of the cross base in this part, or the new extension, of the graveyard, logic said it should sit somewhere on the highest point of land towards the eastern side of the church. Pushing our way through brambles and trees, we found more neglected graves before the ...
