Crosby Ravensworth Cross
Crosby Ravensworth Cross submitted by nicoladidsbury : St Lawrence Church at Crosby Ravensworth. The cross is believed to date from 7th centuary. A beautiful church well worth a visit if you are in the Shap area. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Cumbria

This site is recorded as Historic England List Entry 1007599, which tell us this cross: "is located to the south of the church and includes a medieval chamfered stone shaft 2.1m high that measures 0.3m square at its base and tapers to 0.2m square at its top. The shaft consists of three fragments fastened together and is set into a socket stone 0.7m square and 0.4m high. The shaft's chamfered corners have widely spaced individual dog-tooth decoration. The cross was damaged during Cromwellian times when the top was broken off and discarded. It is listed Grade II. Two flagstones adjacent to the base of the socket stone are excluded from the scheduling although the ground beneath them is included."

The church itself is described as 'a miniature cathedral', part of it dating from the 12th century; mostly it was rebuilt in 1811. Sitting in the churchyard just south of the south transept is this 7th century cross, which the church guide tells us has stood in or near this position for over 1,000 years: "It was here well before the Vikings came, when the nickname of some important person, 'Hravensvart' (raven-black) was added to the original 'Crosby'. The shaft was repaired in 1984 after being knocked down by the branch blown from a tree, during a gale."

This is a very picturesque spot, with the church being reached by a footbridge over a stream which tumbles alongside the main road through the village. Worth stopping off if passing through the area. Crosby Ravensworth is 4 miles north east of Shap and 5 miles south west of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

I would think a more likely date for the cross would be 10th or 11th century, and so early Medieval.

There appears to be some confusion about the precise date of this cross shaft and base. The cross is not listed on the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture web site, but I have come across a number of crosses and cross bases in Cumbria that have been confirmed by HER records as being Anglo Saxon that are not included in the Corpus catalogue.

The British History Online record for Crosby Ravensworth describes this cross as being medieval. The Archaeological Data Service also has a record for a 'wayside marker' which was relocated from the side of the road in Crosby Ravensworth to the churchyard. Some further research will be needed to determine which record is correct!

It's a lovely location, and worth stopping by to visit.

There were two SIDs for this ancient cross, plus photos from Crosby Ravensworth Stone Row were also displaying. I've amalgamated the entries for the cross, renamed the photographs and deleted the duplicate entry (SID 17758). Hopefully now sorted!
