Perpetual Solar Calendar Stone Circle. (est 2024).
This site was built after recognizing the personal need for a perpetual solar calendar that will operate without technology, or reference to a Gregorian calendar, which means the circle does not need adjustments for leap days at any point, and it is therefore truely perpetual.
The intention was to build a stone circle with glacial deposited granite megaliths, dug out of the ground on the land, that could allow the observer to calculate the phase of the year for use in farm animal breeding, birthing, crop planting and harvesting, accurate observation of solar noon and of solar altitude and Polaris altitude for confirmation of stage of the year, as well as recognition of the cardinal and cross quarter festivals.
The stone circle has an internal circumference of 365 feet, and is comprised of a central witness stone surrounded by 12 stones placed based on physical observations of the local sunrise and sunsets and calculations for local latitude and altitude.
The 12 stones are set out as follows.
True North Stone: aligned from witness stone with Polaris over multiple nights and times of year for accuracy.
South Stone: aligned Through North-Central to South position.
On the Eastern (Sunrise) Side clockwise from North the stones are placed as follows.
Midsummer 47°
Lugnasadh (cross quarter) 68.5°
Equinox 90°
Samhain (cross quarter) 110°
Midwinter 130°
From Mid winter sunrise the sun commences its return path counter clockwise.
Midwinter 130°
Imbolc (cross quarter) 110°
Equinox 90°
Beltane (cross quarter) 68.5°
Mid summer 47°
The cross quarter days are set at the true bifurcations between the solstices and the equinoxes, and not the dates set in Gregorian Calendars which can be variable or not representative of the actual date.
On the Western (sunset) side the stones are mirrored from the Eastern side, actual positions are physically 1° different from the sunrise side due to local topography, thus the track of the sun around the circle for each position is evident, and allows for an hourglass effect from sunrise to sunset, the South stone indicating solar noon every day.
(The discrepancies from expected sunset position were noticed by physical observations which differed from the expected calculations by approximately 12 inches, this caused quite a level of confusion until it was realised that the local topography to the East (2.5km) was a very slightly higher altitude , this accounted for the differences in observed to calculated positions, and the decision was made to use the observed positions for local accuracy).
From Midsummer - Midwinter - Midsummer sunrises are spaced by 5.5" per day through the year along the circumference arc between the points. This allows the observer to place smaller stones at the observed sunrise positions for a few days to see which way the sun is travelling which of course allows for anticipation of seasonal changes.
The reason for aligning sunrises and sunsets on the same circle, was that on some mornings the sun may not be visible due to atmospheric conditions, but may be visible in the evening on the same day and vice versa. This also raises the ambiance of the circle at festival timings as some are observed at sunrise and others at sunset.
Conclusions: The circle operates exactly as intended. It has become a daily ritual for a few minutes to observe the suns movements and seasonal changes, At the very least the circle was built with lots of planning and decision making, and will last for a very long time before any prescessional deviations from true north become apparent. At best it provides a genuine way to allow insights into the building of a purposeful monument for others to follow, which means that after 5000 years the skills of our neolithic ancestors can be held in a new light when reproduced deliberately in the 21st century and beyond.
The stone circle is situated on privately owned land which is an active organic and silvopasture farm, and is completely off grid and self sustaining. If anyone wishes to know more, or to visit please contact the owner through this site.
