The first mention of the Two Lads cairns is in the late 18th century by Dorning Rasbotham, an antiquarian, writer, painter and one time High Sheriff of Lancashire. He mentions two small cairns, quite close together, sat on a larger one.

Another writer suggests there was a rectangular ditch enclosing the cairns but no trace of this remains now. Rasbotham called the cairns the Winter Lads and it is not impossible the two cairns framed a winter solstice sunset, from a site in Smithills that has now been lost. The local lore tells of two boys who perished on the moor during a vicious snowstorm.

For a long time there were two well built stone cairns then, in the late 70s, a third one appeared. The site has formerely been listed as an Ancient Monument but this has probably now been rescinded. The cairns are much altered and a report from early 2021 tells that one of the cairns has been pulled apart. A simple geo-phys survey should answer many questions and perhaps give hints as to what the original monument looked like, suggesting an appropriate direction for restoration.
