Hillfort in Cheshire

This hillfort stands at 120m above sea level overlooking the River Mersey. It is defended naturally to the north and west by steep cliffs and to the south by a double rampart. Two additional banks have been discovered enclosing a rock ledge on the cliff to the north side. Excavations last century revealed a wall composed of sand and rubble, revetted with stone to the back and front. As at many hillforts in Cheshire the defences have been badly ploughed apart from to the west in the area in the care of the National Trust.

Theres not much to see, at the top at the oppostie side to the pathway down through the woods there is some remains of the ruble rampart. Also if you walk down the path towards the farm, in the fields to left n right of track you can see the remainders of ramparts in the land (upraised ridge)

However excavations will be taking place soon , so watch out for more stuff!

Mike,
Click on the map icons from the page, especially the grey one that goes to the Magic Map.

From there I got this:

I was searching for something about the Hill Fort at Helsby, been up there a few times but never seen the slightest thing. Do you have any info, or location as to where it might be.

Also they say' there are other ruins in the local area. Any tips.

Cheers,
Mike

We went to visit the fort last weekend, but the whole hillside was covered with bracken, so we decided to leave it for a few months when we shall return to photograph.
