In 1965, 1970 and 1987 Hayen et al. made some outstanding findings. In 1965 they discovered and excavated a partly well preserved section of the plank track with all construction details still visible and also found two magnificent anthropomorphic statues, that were placed beside (one on each side) a bridge-like part where the track originally crossed a stream.
The statues measure 110 cm and 95cm and are carved from oak planks. The larger one was interpreted as a male the smaller one as female. The male statue is 5-7cm thick, the female statue 2-3cm. Two similar, but less refined statues were discovered in 1970 at another part. Similar plank statues are also known from a plank track in Westerwanna and from Montbouy in France for example.
Nowadays a part of the plank track is reconstructed including replicas of the two statues found in 1965. The original statues are located at the Landesmuseum in Oldenburg.
The location given indicates the recommended position (an inn named „Ton drögen Schinken“) to start approaching the site. If you walk North from this position there is a signpost at the first intersection (in 2010). It is a walk of about 1,5km.
