Museum in Cambridgeshire

Ely Museum invites us to "Come and explore the heritage of Ely and the surrounding fens, from the prehistoric creatures who swam in the ancient oceans to Ely today. Find out about the ways of life from the wide wetlands to the rich farmland and how the unusual landscape has shaped the lives of the people who lived here. Built on an island of solid land surrounded by marshes, discover the development of Ely from a monastic foundation to a market town."

Exhibitions explore "Who built Ely Cathedral? How were eels caught? What did Romans use to cook? What did Saxon women wear? Who was evacuated to Ely during WWII? What grows in the fields? Which ancient creatures lived here? How do you make a stone axe?"

Located at The Old Gaol, Market St, Ely CB7 4LS, the opening times are:
Tuesday to Saturday 10:30am - 5:00pm
Sunday 12:00pm - 5:00pm
Bank Holidays 10:30am - 5:00pm
Closed Mondays (except Bank Holidays)
There is an entry fee, current £7.00 per adult, £3 per child and £16.50 for a family ticket. Tickets are valid for a year from date of purchase.

In 2023, an intact Bronze Age urn was found, near Ely now on display in the museum. See Archaeology News Online, "Intact Bronze Age urn found during excavation near Ely, Cambridgeshire, 20th September 2023" and BBC News, "Intact Bronze Age pot found during excavation near Ely, 17th September 2023".

This 95% complete Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age urn was found standing upright during developer-funded excavations near Ely.
